Banker plays in World Cup

In the 92nd minute of New Zealand vs Italy, Ricki Herbert put on midfielder Andy Barron who, when he's not on World Cup duty, is a Banker in Wellington. The amateur footballer who works for Westpac Bank came on in the last few minutes to face the likes of Cannavaro, Buffon, De Rossi and Zambrotta. Having featured in New Zealand's win over Bahrain to qualify for the World Cup, Barron was seen ironing his shirt for work at the Bank the next day!

Here are some other interesting stats:
  • Italy has 4.9 million footballers (population of NZ is 3 million)...New Zeland has 200,000 footballers

  • Of these, Italy has 3541 professionals...New Zealand has 25

  • The Italian side are valued at £160million and from the bench can bring on Camoranesi who plays for Juventus...NZ can bring on Jeremy Christie who plays for Tampa Bay Rowdies or Barron who plays for Team Wellington
Barron said of the NZ team 'We've got a couple of stars, the Ryan Nelsons and that. But we're made up of hard workers and we grind out results- like we have in our first 2 games'
